An extended HVAC warranty is mainly worth it when it adds labor coverage, because manufacturer warranties typically cover parts only. ConsumerAffairs puts extended warranties at $300 to $600 a year on average, so weigh that against what repairs cost in your area.
Information checked on November 4, 2026. Warranty terms change by model and year, so read the actual contract before you pay for one.
What your factory warranty already covers
Most major brands give 10 years of parts coverage if you register the equipment on time. However, labor is usually extra. According to ConsumerAffairs, factory warranties also exclude improper installation, lack of maintenance and normal wear and tear.
| Brand | Parts coverage when registered | Labor coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Trane | 10 years, if registered within 60 days | Not included; optional extended warranty through the dealer |
| Carrier | 10 years, if registered within 90 days | Choose 5 years parts plus 3 years labor instead, at participating dealers |
| Lennox | 10 to 12 years, depending on the line | Some lines trade parts years for 3 years of labor; Comfort Shield sold separately |
| Goodman | 10 years, if registered within 60 days | Some models add a 10-year unit replacement |
| Ruud | 10 years, plus a conditional unit replacement on some models | Protection Plus, a third-party contract, covers labor for up to 10 years |
Registration also matters. ConsumerAffairs notes that most brands require it within 60 to 90 days of installation, and missing it can cut parts coverage from 10 years to five. For brand-by-brand details, see our HVAC warranty comparison.
Types of extended HVAC warranty
- Manufacturer labor plans: some brands sell labor coverage on top of the parts warranty. For example, Lennox sells Comfort Shield labor plans for 3, 5 or 10 years, and they’re transferable. Similarly, Carrier has offered labor warranties from AIG during product registration since 2018, ACHR News reported.
- Third-party service contracts: these come from a separate company rather than the manufacturer. Ruud’s Protection Plus, for instance, is a contract from Service Net that covers parts and labor for up to 10 years.
- Installer warranties: these cover the contractor’s workmanship, according to ConsumerAffairs, so ask how long yours lasts.
- Home warranties: these cover several home systems for a yearly fee. Since they work differently, we compare them in home warranty vs HVAC service plan.
What an extended HVAC warranty costs
| Type of coverage | Typical yearly cost |
|---|---|
| Extended warranty | $300–$600 ($25–$50 a month) |
| Home warranty | $450–$600 |
| HVAC maintenance agreement | $150–$300 |
| Installer warranty | $100–$300 |
Also, some extended warranties are sold as a one-time price at installation instead. In that case, divide the price by the number of years it covers to get a yearly cost, as the FTC suggests.
When an extended HVAC warranty is worth it
First of all, compare the plan’s price with the repairs it would cover. For instance, This Old House’s 2026 survey found an average HVAC repair cost of $775. An evaporator coil, by contrast, costs $627 to $2,700 to replace, and the factory warranty covers only the part, not the labor or refrigerant.
Then run the numbers. A plan costing $450 a year adds up to $2,250 over five years, so it pays off only if your covered labor bills exceed that. As a result, an extended HVAC warranty makes the most sense in these cases:
- It adds labor and refrigerant coverage that your factory warranty doesn’t include.
- The manufacturer backs it, or the company behind it has a solid record.
- Also, it transfers to the next owner, which can help if you sell.
- You plan to stay in the home for most of the coverage period.
On the other hand, the FTC says a contract is “not a good value if it doesn’t offer more coverage than the warranty that came with the product.” So skip plans that only repeat your parts coverage.
Questions to ask before you buy an extended HVAC warranty
- Who backs the contract? According to the FTC, it’s “not necessarily the manufacturer.”
- Then, what does it cost in total, including deductibles, service-call fees and transfer fees?
- Which parts and repairs does it cover, and does it include labor and refrigerant?
- Can the company deny a claim if you miss maintenance?
- Who does the repairs, and how do you file a claim?
- Finally, how long has the company been in business, and what do reviews and complaints say?
Red flags to avoid
- Unsolicited calls: the FTC says warranty sales calls are probably illegal if you have no connection with the company.
- High-pressure tactics: a legitimate plan will still be available after you read the contract.
- Overlapping coverage: paying again for parts your factory warranty already covers.
- Maintenance traps: strict service rules that let the company deny claims, so keep every tune-up receipt.
Meanwhile, regular maintenance protects both your warranty and your system. See our furnace tune-up cost guide, and if a repair is already due, our repair or replace guide.

Extended HVAC warranty FAQ
Does an extended warranty cover the compressor?
The compressor is usually covered by the factory parts warranty, according to ConsumerAffairs. Therefore, what an extended plan adds is mainly the labor to replace it, so check that the contract says so.
Is a labor warranty the same as an extended warranty?
Not always. For example, a labor warranty covers technician time, while some extended warranties only lengthen parts coverage. In short, read which one you’re buying.
Do I need to register my HVAC to keep the warranty?
Usually, yes. Trane, for example, requires registration within 60 days for 10-year parts coverage, while Carrier allows 90 days.
Is a home warranty better than an extended HVAC warranty?
It depends on what you want covered. A home warranty covers several systems for a yearly fee, whereas an extended HVAC warranty covers only your heating and cooling. See our home warranty vs HVAC service plan comparison.
