AC capacitor replacement cost is usually $80 to $400, with an average of about $175, according to This Old House, while the part alone costs about $8 to $45. It’s one of the cheapest AC repairs, but it isn’t a DIY job: capacitors can hold a dangerous electrical charge even after the power is off.
Prices checked on November 4, 2026. Leave capacitor work to a qualified HVAC technician, as Trane, Bryant and This Old House all advise.
AC capacitor replacement cost by type
| Capacitor type | Part only | Installed total |
|---|---|---|
| Run capacitor | $8–$30 | $98–$230 |
| Start capacitor | $9–$25 | $99–$225 |
| Dual run capacitor | $15–$45 | $105–$245 |
| Blower capacitor | $9–$12 | $99–$212 |
| Heat pump capacitor | $15–$25 | $105–$225 |
Meanwhile, other sources land in a similar range. For instance, Trane cites $75 to $250 for part and installation, with branded units costing up to $400 or more. Bryant, meanwhile, gives $100 to $400 including parts and labor, and HomeGuide lists $100 to $250 on its repair table.
In fact, labor is most of the bill. This Old House says HVAC contractors typically charge $90 to $200, and the average service call is about $129. Also, HomeServe adds that a high-end capacitor with labor can cost $300 to $400.
What an AC capacitor does
The capacitor “is responsible for energizing your AC system’s motors,” Trane explains. There are three common types, according to Trane: start, run and dual-run capacitors.
In addition, capacitors are rated in voltage and microfarads (MFD), and Trane says most range from 5 to 80 MFD.
Signs your AC capacitor is failing
- The AC takes a while to turn on, or it starts hard.
- Also, you hear humming or buzzing from the outdoor unit.
- Similarly, the AC blows warm air or shuts off on its own.
- In addition, the circuit breaker trips.
- Finally, you see smoke or smell burning, which This Old House lists as a warning sign.
Overall, these signs come from This Old House, Trane and Bryant. Even so, other problems can cause similar symptoms, so a technician should test the capacitor first. For other causes, see our AC not cooling guide.
DIY vs paying the AC capacitor replacement cost
Trane is blunt about it: “Replacing an AC capacitor is not a DIY job.” Capacitors are high-voltage devices that could seriously harm you even with the power off, and touching or mishandling one could lead to serious injury or death, Trane says.
Similarly, Bryant says capacitors “can retain a dangerous electrical charge even after the power is turned off.” For that reason, it says homeowners shouldn’t try to discharge, remove or replace one. This Old House agrees, warning that capacitors store electricity even when disconnected.
Moreover, the savings are small. Since the part costs only about $8 to $45, doing it yourself saves mostly the labor, often $90 to $200. In our view, that isn’t worth the risk.
How long does an AC capacitor last?
Most capacitors last 10 to 20 years, according to This Old House, and Bryant’s guide gives the same range in its main text. However, Bryant’s FAQ says 5 to 10 years, so a capacitor can fail well before the rest of the system.
Is the AC capacitor replacement cost worth it on an old AC?
A capacitor is a small repair, so it’s almost always worth fixing, even on an older AC. For example, a $175 capacitor on a 12-year-old system gives 2,100 under the $5,000 rule that HomeGuide and This Old House use. On the other hand, if the compressor itself has failed, read our AC compressor replacement cost guide before you decide.

AC capacitor replacement cost: FAQ
How much does it cost to replace an AC capacitor?
Generally, the AC capacitor replacement cost is $80 to $400, with an average of about $175, according to This Old House.
Can a bad capacitor damage my AC?
It can keep the AC from starting or running properly. For example, Bryant lists hard starting, warm air and random shutoffs as signs, so have it checked promptly.
Is a dual capacitor more expensive?
Slightly. For example, This Old House lists a dual run capacitor at $105 to $245 installed, compared with $98 to $230 for a run capacitor.
Does my warranty cover a capacitor?
The part may be covered under your manufacturer’s parts warranty, but labor usually isn’t, according to ConsumerAffairs. See our HVAC warranty comparison.
