AC compressor replacement cost averages $1,550 in 2026, according to This Old House, and most jobs fall between $700 and $2,100 depending on the size of the unit. That’s far less than a new central AC at about $5,000 to $8,300, but if your system is over 10 years old or out of warranty, replacing the whole unit is often the better buy.
Prices checked on November 4, 2026. Your quote depends on the brand, the refrigerant, your warranty and local labor rates.
AC compressor replacement cost by size
| System size | Low | Average | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5–2 tons | $700 | $1,050 | $1,400 |
| 2.5–3 tons | $900 | $1,500 | $2,100 |
| 3.5–4 tons | $1,100 | $1,600 | $2,100 |
Meanwhile, other sources land in a similar range. Angi puts the average AC compressor at $1,200, with most jobs between $800 and $2,300. In addition, labor runs $75 to $150 an hour, or a flat $300 to $900 for the four to six hours the job usually takes, according to Angi.
Extra parts can also raise the total. For example, Angi adds $100 to $350 if the system needs more refrigerant, while HomeServe lists $100 to $200 for a filter drier and $150 to $400 for a capacitor.
AC compressor replacement cost under warranty
Above all, your warranty makes the biggest difference. According to Angi, you might spend $600 to $1,200 under warranty, compared with $1,300 to $2,500 once the warranty has expired. That’s because manufacturer warranties typically cover parts only, not labor, according to ConsumerAffairs.
In addition, HomeServe says manufacturer warranties often cover the compressor for 5 to 10 years. However, many brands require registration within 60 to 90 days to get the full term. For details by brand, see our HVAC warranty comparison.
Compressor replacement vs a new AC: cost comparison
| Option | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| New compressor, under warranty | $600–$1,200 (Angi) |
| New compressor, out of warranty | $1,300–$2,500 (Angi); $1,550 average (This Old House) |
| New central AC | $5,000–$8,300 (HomeGuide) |
However, with a new compressor, the rest of the system stays the same age. By contrast, a new AC comes with a new warranty and must meet current SEER2 efficiency standards. For full pricing, see our AC replacement cost guide.
When to replace the compressor and when to replace the AC
- Repair it when your AC is under 10 years old and the repair costs under $1,000, This Old House says.
- Replace the AC if the repair is more than 50% of the price of a new unit or the system is over 10 years old, according to This Old House and HomeServe.
- Use the $5,000 rule: multiply the repair cost by the system’s age. If the result is over $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense, according to HomeGuide and This Old House.
- Replace an R-22 system: This Old House lists R-22 refrigerant as a reason to replace rather than repair.
For example, a 5-year-old AC under warranty with an $800 labor bill gives 4,000 under the $5,000 rule, so the repair makes sense. On the other hand, a 13-year-old AC with a $1,800 compressor job gives 23,400, so a new system is the better choice. Also, see our AC lifespan guide and our repair or replace guide.
R-410A systems: what a compressor repair means now
Since January 2025, newly made residential AC systems must use refrigerants with a global warming potential below 700, such as R-454B and R-32. Still, existing R-410A equipment “will still need to be serviced for many years,” according to Copeland, a compressor maker, writing for ACCA. Copeland also says its R-410A compressors will remain available to repair existing systems.
However, the same article warns that R-410A “may become more expensive” as supplies are limited. Moreover, parts aren’t interchangeable, so an R-410A system can’t be charged with an A2L refrigerant. If you replace the whole system instead, North Carolina’s fire marshal says the existing R-410A indoor coil must be replaced too.
For more on the refrigerant change, see our guides to the R-410A phase-out and R-454B vs R-32, plus our AC coil replacement cost guide.
Signs your AC compressor may be failing
- First of all, warm air from the vents while the system runs.
- Also, loud banging, rattling, grinding or clicking from the outdoor unit.
- Hard starts, a tripped breaker or an outdoor unit that won’t turn on.
- In addition, ice or moisture on the compressor or refrigerant lines.
- Finally, higher electricity use without a clear reason.
These signs come from This Old House and HomeServe, so they’re a useful checklist. Even so, cheaper parts can cause similar problems, and This Old House lists electrical issues as a typical repair case. So ask the technician to rule out the capacitor and contactor before you approve a compressor. See our AC capacitor replacement cost guide and our AC not cooling guide.

AC compressor replacement cost: FAQ
Is it worth replacing a compressor on a 10-year-old AC?
Usually not if it’s out of warranty. This Old House suggests replacement once a system is over 10 years old, and an AC compressor replacement cost of $1,500 on a 10-year-old unit gives 15,000 under the $5,000 rule.
How long does a compressor replacement take?
Generally, Angi says the job takes four to six hours, so most replacements are done in a day.
Can I replace just the compressor on an R-410A system?
Yes. In fact, according to Copeland, R-410A compressors will still be available to repair existing systems. However, ask about the cost of R-410A refrigerant, since it may rise.
What does a heat pump compressor cost?
Similarly, Angi lists heat pump compressor replacement at $650 to $2,400. For other heat pump repairs, see our heat pump freezing up guide.
