Rheem vs Ruud: Same Company, Different Units?

Homeowner compares two similar outdoor units and spec sheets for a Rheem vs Ruud decision.

Rheem vs Ruud: they’re the same company. Ruud’s own brochure says Rheem Sales Company manufactures the Ruud brand and that Rheem Manufacturing Company owns the Ruud trademarks, and comparable models carry matching specs. For example, the Rheem RA16AY and the Ruud UA16AY air conditioners both use R-454B refrigerant, both list up to 17 SEER2 and 12 EER2, and both come in 2- to 5-ton sizes. So the real differences are the brand name, the series names and the dealer who installs it.

Below, we compare matching models, as well as warranties and prices, and we explain how to choose between a Rheem and a Ruud quote. Specs checked on November 4, 2026.

Who makes Rheem and Ruud?

Both brands belong to Rheem Manufacturing Company. In fact, the Ruud UA16AY brochure states that Rheem Sales Company manufactures the Ruud brand and that Rheem Manufacturing Company owns the Ruud trademarks, and Ruud’s website carries a Rheem Manufacturing Company copyright. Likewise, both brands sell their current air conditioners under the same Endeavor Line name, which Rheem says it created to meet the 2023 Department of Energy regulations.

Model names: how to match a Rheem and a Ruud quote

The series names differ; however, the model numbers line up. Rheem uses an “RA” prefix and series names such as Classic, Classic Plus and Prestige; Ruud uses a “UA” prefix with names such as Achiever and Achiever Plus. For instance, the RA16AY and UA16AY share the same refrigerant, efficiency ratings and capacity range. Therefore, if two quotes list matching numbers, you’re most likely comparing equivalent equipment.

Prices compared

In fact, price sources usually treat them as one brand. HomeGuide, for example, lists “Rheem / Ruud” together at $1,800 to $5,500 for an AC unit, $800 to $3,900 for a furnace and $1,400 to $3,800 for a heat pump before installation. Similarly, PICKHVAC lists Rheem/Ruud central ACs at $3,600 to $8,500 installed. As a result, any price difference between two quotes usually comes from the dealer, not the brand.

Warranty terms compared

In general, both brands use conditional warranties that require registration. Rheem lists 10 years of conditional parts coverage plus a 10-year conditional unit replacement on the RA16AY. Ruud’s UA16AY brochure lists 10 years of conditional parts coverage with registration, and Ruud’s UA16AZ page lists 10 years of parts plus 10 years of conditional unit replacement. In addition, Ruud sells an optional Protection Plus extended service agreement, backed by a third party, that can add parts and labor coverage.

Rheem vs Ruud: which should you choose?

  • Compare the dealer first. Since the equipment is so similar, installation quality, labor warranty and service matter most.
  • Match the model numbers. Make sure both quotes use the same tier, size and SEER2 rating.
  • Check registration rules. Both brands’ best warranty terms require registration, so ask the dealer to register the system for you.

Rheem vs Ruud FAQ

Is Ruud better than Rheem?

Not in any way we could verify, because matching models share the same specs, so the better choice is usually the better installer.

Are Rheem and Ruud parts interchangeable?

Matching models appear to share the same design, but always confirm parts compatibility with the model and serial number, since we couldn’t verify full interchangeability.

Why does one company sell two brands?

Rheem doesn’t explain it on the pages we checked. In general, however, sister brands let manufacturers sell through different dealer networks.
