Best HVAC Brands in 2026: Reliability, Warranty and Price Compared

Couple compares the best HVAC brands with a dealer in a showroom with outdoor units on display.

The best HVAC brands depend on your budget: Carrier, Trane and Lennox sit at the premium end, while Goodman, Amana and other value brands cost less for similar basic equipment. In HomeGuide’s price data, a Goodman AC unit runs $1,200 to $3,000 before installation, versus $2,500 to $5,800 for Carrier and $1,600 to $5,800 for Trane. Warranties differ more than most buyers expect, so registration deadlines and labor coverage matter as much as the logo.

Below, we compare major brands on price, warranty and top efficiency, explain which brands share a parent company, and show what matters more than the badge. Prices and terms checked on November 4, 2026.

In other words, the brand changes the equipment price by a few thousand dollars at most, while installation, system size and efficiency tier move the total even more. For installed system prices, see our AC replacement cost, furnace replacement cost and heat pump cost guides.

Best HVAC brands: warranty comparison

BrandRegistered warranty (registration deadline)
Trane10 years parts, up to 12 years on select compressors; 5 years if unregistered (60 days)
Carrier10 years parts, or 5 years parts plus 3 years labor; 5 years if unregistered (90 days)
Goodman10 years parts; select models also add a lifetime compressor and 10-year unit replacement; 5 years if unregistered (60 days)
LennoxUp to 12 years on Signature models, with labor options; 5 to 10 years without registration, by tier (60 days)
Ruud (UA16AZ AC)10 years parts plus 10-year conditional unit replacement (registration required)
Sources: manufacturer warranty pages for Trane, Carrier, Goodman, Lennox and Ruud, checked November 4, 2026. Terms vary by model and state; for example, some states, such as California, don’t require registration.

Notably, most standard warranties cover parts only. Trane, for example, says labor isn’t covered under its base or registered warranty, whereas Carrier offers an optional 5-year parts plus 3-year labor choice through participating dealers. So always ask the installer what labor warranty they include.

Which brands are made by the same company?

  • Carrier: its brand list includes Carrier, Bryant, Payne (now WeatherMaker by Carrier), Day & Night, Heil, Tempstar and Comfortmaker.
  • Trane Technologies: similarly, Trane, American Standard and Ameristar.
  • Daikin: Goodman and Amana; Daikin bought Goodman in 2012, and the company became Daikin Comfort Technologies North America in 2022.
  • Rheem Manufacturing: Rheem and Ruud.

As a result, sister brands often share designs and parts but differ in price, dealer networks and warranty terms. That’s why comparing the specific model and the installer matters more than the logo.

Reliability: what we can and can’t tell you

We didn’t find free, independent reliability data for 2026 that we could verify, so we don’t rank brands by breakdown rates. However, the evidence is clear that installation quality matters a great deal. For instance, Building Science Corporation estimates that a refrigerant charge that’s off by 20% can cut performance by about 5% to 20%, and ENERGY STAR says airflow problems can reduce efficiency by up to 15%. Therefore, choose the installer first and the brand second.

How to choose among the best HVAC brands

  1. To begin with, get at least three quotes, ideally covering two or three brands.
  2. Next, compare the same size, SEER2 or AFUE rating and compressor type across quotes.
  3. Then check the registered warranty, the registration deadline and any labor coverage in writing.
  4. Also ask whether the dealer is certified by the brand, since some warranty options, such as Carrier’s labor choice, require a participating dealer.
  5. Finally, confirm the refrigerant type and that the indoor and outdoor units are a matched pair.

Best HVAC brands FAQ

What is the most reliable HVAC brand?

In short, we can’t name one with confidence, because we found no free, verifiable reliability data. Instead, focus on a good installer, a matched system and a strong registered warranty.

Are Goodman and Amana the same?

Yes, in the sense that they’re made by the same company. Goodman and Amana are both brands of Daikin Comfort Technologies North America, formerly Goodman.

Is a premium brand worth the extra cost?

Sometimes, because premium lines often offer higher efficiency, variable-speed options and quieter operation. However, a well-installed mid-range system usually beats a poorly installed premium one.
