Furnace short cycling means the furnace turns on and off in cycles that are often shorter than 5 to 10 minutes, before the house reaches the thermostat setting. The most common causes are a dirty filter, a thermostat problem, a blocked flue or an oversized furnace, and repairs usually cost $100 to $400.
Prices checked on November 4, 2026. If the furnace keeps shutting down after you’ve checked the filter and vents, turn it off and call a qualified HVAC technician.
What counts as furnace short cycling
Carrier defines short cycling as a furnace that turns on and off repeatedly in cycles that are often less than 5 to 10 minutes. Similarly, Trane says a furnace cycle will generally be at least 7 minutes long. However, Trane notes that more cycling can be normal on very cold nights, and that single-stage and two-stage furnaces cycle more visibly than modulating ones.
Fortunately, short cycling isn’t usually an immediate danger, according to Carrier. Still, it raises energy bills, causes uneven heating and wears out parts faster. Over time, Carrier warns, the stress can even crack the heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide.
Common causes of furnace short cycling
A dirty air filter
To begin with, Carrier calls a dirty filter a leading cause. Because it restricts airflow, heat builds up, and the limit switch shuts the burners down. Therefore, check the filter monthly and replace 1-inch filters every 1 to 3 months, as Carrier and Trane recommend.
Thermostat problems
Faulty wiring, dying batteries, poor calibration or a spot in direct sunlight can all cause short cycling, according to Trane. For this reason, Carrier recommends an interior wall away from sun, doors, windows, vents and other heat sources. Otherwise, a technician can recalibrate or replace a faulty thermostat.
A blocked flue or vent pipe
Trane says a blocked exhaust flue, from something like a bird’s nest, can make the furnace shut down. In that case, the flue limiter turns the furnace off to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. So if you suspect a blocked vent, call a technician rather than running the furnace.
A faulty limit switch
A failing limit switch can wrongly sense overheating and shut the furnace off early, Trane explains. In that case, a trained technician should test it. Meanwhile, HomeGuide puts a limit switch replacement at $100 to $375.
A cracked heat exchanger
A cracked heat exchanger can cause overheating and repeated shutdowns, according to Trane. Since it can also leak carbon monoxide, it needs a professional inspection. Moreover, HomeGuide lists replacement at $1,000 to $3,000. See our guide to a cracked heat exchanger.
An oversized furnace
Trane calls an oversized furnace the most common cause of short cycling. Because it heats the space too fast, the thermostat is satisfied quickly, Carrier explains. Also, Trane adds that insulation upgrades can lower a home’s heating load enough to make a once-correct furnace oversized. The fix is a proper load calculation, such as ACCA Manual J; see our guide on what size furnace you need.
Furnace short cycling repair costs
| Repair | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Short-cycling repair (general) | $100–$400 |
| Flame sensor | $80–$250 |
| Limit switch | $100–$375 |
| Thermostat | $190–$480 |
| Control board | $300–$650 |
| Heat exchanger | $1,000–$3,000 |
However, if the cause is an oversized furnace, a repair won’t fix it. Instead, the real solution is a correctly sized replacement, which you can price in our furnace replacement cost guide. In the meantime, our two-stage vs single-stage furnace guide explains how staged furnaces work.
What to check before you call a technician
- First of all, replace the air filter if it’s dirty.
- Then open all supply registers and clear any blocked return vents, as Carrier recommends.
- Next, check the thermostat’s location, settings and batteries.
- After that, look at the outdoor vent or flue pipe for visible blockages, but don’t try to clear the inside yourself.
- Finally, if the furnace still shuts down before reaching the set temperature, turn it off and call a qualified HVAC professional.
In addition, keep working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends. Then, if an alarm sounds, get outside and call 911. For other heating problems, see our furnace blowing cold air guide.

Furnace short cycling: FAQ
How many times should a furnace cycle per hour?
Neither Carrier nor Trane gives a set number. However, Trane says a normal cycle is generally at least 7 minutes, and cycles that end in under 5 to 10 minutes suggest short cycling, according to Carrier.
Is furnace short cycling dangerous?
Usually not right away, although it shouldn’t be ignored. Yet Carrier warns that over time it can lead to a cracked heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide, so don’t ignore it.
Can a dirty filter cause furnace short cycling?
Yes. In fact, Carrier calls a dirty filter a leading cause, because the restricted airflow makes the limit switch shut the furnace down.
How much does it cost to fix furnace short cycling?
Generally, HomeGuide puts a typical short-cycling repair at $100 to $400. On the other hand, an oversized furnace or a cracked heat exchanger can mean a much larger bill.
